Florovsky on Tradition

"Tradition is not a principle striving to restore the past, using the past as a criterion for the present. Such a conception of tradition is rejected by history itself and by the consciousness of the Orthodox Church... Tradition is the constant abiding of the Spirit and not only the memory of words. Tradition is a charismatic, not a historical event"

- Father Georges Florovsky

Bring it on! (I jest).

I don't think they've got much reason for concern. Everyone knows my affection for my evangelical brethren, and that the main reason I entered the Orthodox Church was to campaign for John Wesley as a universal saint! : ) I make a point to read his Journal and drink a toast to him every May 24th (with 'Presbyterian holy water' nonetheless - approved for 'medicinal' purposes in Wesley's "Primitive Physick"), in commemoration of his 'heartwarming at Aldersgate.' Usually Macallans will do.

Kidding aside, Derek, do these come across as fighting words? I feel like - minus a word or two - this could be Wesley, one of the 17th century Anglican Divines... heck, perhaps even some of the Contintental Reformers. That last bit could be downright Quaker or something - straight out of the Journals of George Fox!

Cool picture of Florovsky, non?

I do like the picture of Florovsky. (Was this really posted on Wednesday? I didn't see it until Friday. I pride myself on being in the know and fashionable, so this was bruising blow to my ego.)
